Starlites Micro & Mini
Basketball
Six years ago Starlites embarked on a journey which aims at bridging
the gap between the educational theory within sports and active
development as regards to children and sport together with active
practice sessions carried out within our mini basketball nursery.
The aims of our mini basketball project were originally developed on
the principles as designed by the teachings of Istvan Balyi and Long
Term Athletic Development. This project targets three main areas:
1. Development of Physical Literacy
2. Skill Improvement
3. Life Long Active participation |

Children coming into Starlites
mini basketball nursery are exposed to activities which target the
development of the 4 main domains within the areas of physical
development and Education. The Physical, Social, cognitive and
Affective Domains. The Physical Domain is challenged through regular
physical active sessions which help develop fitness and help
participants learn about this vital quality. The Cognitive Domain is
catered for through activities which not only challenge children
physically but keeps them mentally focused when striving to complete
problem solving situations within planned games and activities.
Children are also constantly meeting situations which evoke decision
making and also situations which highlight emotions and feelings
developed within team games and sport. These situations within the
Affective Domain help children grow and learn to appreciate the
concepts of team. Team sport teaches children about the importance
of working together, striving together, helping each other, creating
together and other ‘togetherness opportunities’ which fall within
the Social Domain areas.
Although all 3 components named and numbered above are important to
be developed, and are all targets within all categories of mini
basketball, the development of Physical Literacy is mostly tackled
within categories Under 6, Under 8 and Under 10yrs of age. Skill
Improvement is experienced within all categories. Mini Basketball
skills and skill practice are emphasized as from categories Under 10
onwards. Life Long Active participation is a phenomenon which cannot
be taught or learnt, but it needs to be acquired. This can only be
brought about if the child has had a positive sports experience
during his/her upbringing, hence our role lies mainly in providing
the participants here at Starlites a positive experience which would
eventually lead to a healthy active Lifestyle! |
